To be honest, it started almost as a whim. I wanted to play with some people — just to have some social time around the ukulele. So I approached the library, and they were excited about the idea.

It actually had the touch of serendipity. The library had just started a musical instrument program, and that included several Lanikai concerts! So, if you’d like to try an instrument out before purchasing one, that’d be a good way to do it.

We’ve been meeting since October, and it’s been a lot of fun. The group is very beginner friendly. We go over chords, basic strum patterns, and then apply them to different songs.  Please feel free to come!

In my experience, many people are excited about the ukulele. They want to play, but they don’t know where to start. And that’s understandable. There’s a lot of different sized ukuleles. Tunings can overwhelming – do you want to specialize in high G or low G tuning? Often, there isn’t even a place to go where you can look at ukuleles for evaluation. Unless you’re really lucky to live near a store that sells ukuleles, chances are, you’ll have to select one from off the internet.

So let’s discuss some of the options that can go into your decision making process. These aren’t going to be heavily detailed, just some overall guidelines.
